Developer Dispatch: Armored Warfare news from the forums on PvE rewards, new dealer, map…ranked combat?
It is that time again when I try to catch you up on some of the most interesting topics from the Armored Warfare staff…
PvE changes: AI bot shot delay and AI artillery bots “cheating”
Prior to the last patch AI bots at times had near-instant snapshot ability. While this may prove to be a tougher opponent, it meant you couldn’t reliably count on poking out, hitting a bot that wasn’t aggroed on you, and pop back behind cover safely. They would supernaturally hit you even if their turret reaction time shouldn’t have allowed them to. Obsidian Entertainment introduced a delay, but it was only a small fraction of a second delay to mimic a human’s reaction time. This shouldn’t make the bots easy pickings, though. If it does I’d expect an adjustment in the future.
There is a misconception about this change – it was never intended to make the AI vehicles behave like slugs or react slowly so you can shoot them like rabbits. A small delay was introduced to make the vehicles on par with player reactions.
As for the artillery, so far all the reports of artillery firing on “unspotted” players investigated by OE (where proofs were offered) turned out to be incorrect: in each case the in fact was spotted and only didn’t notice it. ~SilentStalker, Content Manager
As for the artillery….I hadn’t noticed any cheating by them (shooting me when I am not spotted). I have noticed getting hit a lot more by artillery while in PvE. I haven’t played enough matches since the patch to really know how much harder hard has become, but it did seem like I can’t just roll around with impunity anymore. Maybe that is why I was getting hit more frequently by artillery come to think of it. Hmmm.
PvE in Armored Warfare 0.12 has been made harder, but credits are not rolling in?
There is a thread/poll on the forums regarding PvE credit income parity now that the PvE game mode has been made harder. Some of the discussion center around making PvE rewards match those of PvP over a certain duration, not on a per match basis. If Obsidian does want to equate the two modes for rewards some sort of average income over a typical play session is likely a fair way to do this since PvE and PvP matches don’t last the same amount of time. Even within PvE, there seems to be a quite a range but I haven’t sat down and analyzed it.
We have a game plan for this, but it requires both code and UI changes, and it’s something we need to handle very delicately to avoid making things worse. As such, I can’t provide any sort of ETA for changes.
As I’ve mentioned elsewhere in the past, tuning PvE rewards is complex for a number of reasons, such as the lack of ammo and repair costs, different win rates and durations for different maps, etc. There are band-aid solutions we could have done faster (like just increasing the Premium multiplier in PvE), but ultimately a more robust solution that resolves some of the underlying problems is going to be better for the players in the long run. Unfortunately, this does mean it’s taking longer to deploy the changes than we’d like, but we are committed to improving PvE income. ~Obsidian_Arbiter, Developer
There will come a time soon after release when Armored Warfare is no longer in beta that they may not be able to rely on the beta tag shielding them from higher expectations. For right now though, the game is still in beta. We want them to get this right and I hear his plea for patience. Perhaps they could offer some articles on what changes they are planning to PvE. This could help the community (although at times limited glimpses into upcoming changes have backfired for them too) have more patience. But Commander Chickensen, Armored Warfare developer, did at least offer up a glimpse:
I can explain this a little better. We are revamping the PvE rewards, I mentioned in the stream that we aren’t happy with where they are at, there are challenges like the ammo costs you mention, there are others as well.
Currently the average PvE match is earning more rewards per minute in both rep and credits by a decent margin, if we just continue to boost the rewards up, we then create a situation where it is easy to earn credits without contributing your share to the team. In my opinion this creates a situation where you’ll have players queue-ing and not pulling their weight just to farm credits and rep. PvP and PvE do need to be similar in player contribution vs output or we’ll have a situation worse than we have now.
The system we are working on will track a lot more of the player actions and provide a lot more rewards for players that contribute more than the average player, but will require that you contribute more to the team to get there.
When is that third arms dealer tech tree coming to Armored Warfare?
If I recall correctly, the Chinese tanks are coming first (as a branch) of all the stuff scheduled in 2016 – in first half of the year (possibly even first quarter). ~SilentSTalker, Content Manager
I’ve mentioned before that I enjoy some of the smaller matches you get thrown in on low population servers. Whether this is late at night on NA/EU or on the RU PTS, some of those 2 on 2 and 3 on 3 matches are quite fun. Even 7 vs 7 and 10 vs 10 have been enjoyable. At times, it fails miserably. For instance, in a 4 on 4 when you get one time that has players going every which way and the other team drives around as a team and picks them off, the game was decided in the first few seconds. Some other players are starting to see smaller matches as fun now too. Why hasn’t Obsidian offered up different game modes or believe they won’t work?
This is something we are looking into, but generally the 15vs15 format is considered to be the best (Wargaming got that right). Smaller formats on the same maps could lead into even worse washout (15:0 wins/losses) situation. ~SilentStalker, Content Manager
[on what date do they base their opinion?] Based on extensive pre-alpha testing. ~SilentStalker, Content Manager
The problem is that such cases [smaller matches] currently occur in off times (especially on EU server), which usually means only the most dedicated and skilled players are playing at that point, which in turns considerably influences the way the battles go. ~SilentStalker, Content Manager
I know when I talked to Rich at the even in California we discussed smaller matches. He wasn’t opposed to the idea but he did have some valid concerns about map balances and sizes influencing what can be done with a smaller team. So there likely is a good reason to go with 15 vs 15, but I do firmly believe that once there is a large enough player base to no fracture it more by having too many modes, Obsidian needs to introduce more game modes. Armored Warfare can’t just rely on the tried and true WoT style random pub matches.
When camouflage comes out, can players apply it to the ICE vehicles?
The ICE skin is hard-coded. That means it will likely not be possible for the ICE tanks to be able to switch to different camouflage (would make no sense either, with the special “ICE” look being one of the main things making the tank different) ~SilentStalker, Content Manager
I’d think the same would apply for the MERC vehicles too.
Coastal Threat Map is returning soon
Did you play in Alpha and remember the Coastal Threat map? Back in September I think I covered already that it was going under a massive overhaul. Seems like ti may be getting closer to re-release.
This map will return (relatively soon hopefully), it underwent a massive overhaul (basically, it’s a completely new map) based on early player feedback and the fact it caused some significant performance drops. ~SilentStalker, Content Manger
Somewhat a shame that it may be so drastcally changed. You can see a bit of it in this video. The voice is that of Freitag (Community Manager) if you are curious:
Armored Warfare year closing video wishes players Happy Holidays…and hints at Ranked Combat!
Just in case this post ends up being the last today (I never know, sometimes I think I am done and do several more posts, other times I plan on several more but events conspire against me)…..
Have a Merry Christmas everyone!!!!
